Emotional & Social Intelligence

Emotional and Social Intelligence describes the capacities of awareness and regulation of the emotions, moods and behaviour of ourselves, of others and of groups. Many leadership theorists are seeing ESI as a more important contributor to effective leadership than IQ. For Christian leaders, becoming emotionally self aware is the beginning of becoming emotionally self controlled. The management of our emotions is part of the spiritual transformation Jesus envisages for those who follow him. Bringing ourselves under the rule of Christ involves bringing the whole of ourselves, including our emotions, in line with his character. The ability to inspire and empower others, to facilitate positive organisational and relational change and to manage conflict are all important skills for leaders and team members. Fortunately, emotional competencies can be learned to enhance godly leadership.
